iijima sunago

There are many Acer palmatum to love, yet I have become quite attached to ‘Iijima sunago’ which means ‘sand-sprinkled.’  The copper colored leaves positively glow in summer and have green sprinkles and veining.  The tree is showiest when back lit.  As if that is not enough, come fall the color explodes into vibrant shades of orange, red and apricot.  An amazing tree, the only shortcoming is how difficult it is to find in the trade.  We need more.
